Mid-Century Modern is one of our favorite styles of architecture. There are so many wonderful architects that are from the Puget Sound area, and we love working with buyers and sellers who share this passion. Earlier this year, we had a chance to help purchase a very special property in Shoreline, WA. Enjoy some of these listing photos.
Seattle-born architect Jerry Gropp returned to Seattle at 14, after spending his early years in Spokane. Post-World War II, he utilized the GI Bill to earn a degree in Architecture from the University of Washington in 1949, gaining valuable experience with notable architects such as Paul Thiry - the leading architect of the 1962 Seattle World's Fair. After obtaining his license, he worked with Benjamin McAdoo Jr. before founding his own practice in 1953.
Gropp gained national recognition through features in leading shelter magazines and collaborated with the National Association of Homebuilders. Over two decades, he created over eighty affordable "Plan Packages" for budget-conscious families, ranging from $50 to $60. "The Rainier" Plan (No. 2450) was one of his most popular.
Gropp also designed custom homes in the Pacific Northwest, Hawaii, and in Argentina. Noteworthy projects include the Howse House on Mercer Island, the Cottingham House in Innis Arden (1966), the Lett House on Lopez Island, and the Mottett House on Mercer Island (1965).
